Foreign Student Visa

Description

It allows foreigners studying in Chile to apply for a residence visa to study as regular students in state or private educational institutions recognized by the state.

The visa does not allow working in the country, except in very specific cases (or when the activity to be performed is necessary to pay for the studies).

Residence permits requested abroad are granted by the Chilean consulates in the respective countries, and depend on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreigners residing in the Metropolitan Region and the Antofagasta Region must apply by mail; and those residing in other regions must apply at the provincial government corresponding to their home address.

Who is it addressed to?

Foreign citizens who travel to Chile to study as regular students in State or private educational institutions recognized by the State, or in centers or organizations of higher or specialized studies, as long as they can prove their enrollment and have a valid tourist permit or other residence permit.

What steps should you take?

- Application form, only for those residing in the Metropolitan Region and the Antogasta Region.

- Please review the required documents according to the status of the applicant and the grounds to support the application.

Note: Colombians, Peruvians and Dominicans must present a current judicial record certificate for any application.

The cost varies according to the applicant's nationality.

How long is it for?

The permit is granted for a maximum period of one year (except in the case of scholarship holders, in which it may be granted for the duration of the scholarship), renewable until the studies are completed.

Office Guide

Only available for those residing in regions other than the regions of Santiago and Antofagasta.

1. Gather the required background information.

2. Request an appointment.

3. Go to the provincial government that corresponds to your home address. 

4. Explain the reason for your visit: to apply for a residence permit for foreign students.

5. Submit the required information.

6. As a result, you will have applied for the permit, and you will get a response in approximately 120 days. 

Mailing Guide

Only for residents of the region of Santiago and Antofagasta.

1. Gather the required background information.

2. Send them by registered letter to:

2.1 In the Metropolitan Region to Clasificador 8, Correo central, Santiago.

 

2.2 In the Antofagasta Region to Clasificador 31, Correo Antofagasta, Antofagasta.

3. As a result, you will have requested the permit.  You will get an answer in approximately 120 working days. (You will receive a numbered and stamped copy at your home address).
